* For purposes of this discussion, I use this term to mean “exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence,” as it is defined in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), 5th edition. While this definition does not encompass all experiences that may be associated with psychological distress, I adhere to it because it describes mine, and helped me more efficiently identify relevant sources of information within the vast body of research on human response to adversity.
